Writing- Action Beats

So, as usual, I was using the world wide web to learn more about writing. If you want to get better and you don’t have the money to attend conferences and take expensive classes like me it’s the next best thing.

Today, I discovered Action Beats. I had been using them in my writing and didn’t even know there was a name for them. Turns out I’ve been using them kind of wrong. Now I know better. Here is an amazing article on Action Beats. She really spells it out and you should check it out if you are a writer and also don’t understand or know what an action beat is.

#WIP Talk: The Life Choices Writing Tag

RULES

My current WIP is for a New Year’s anthology. So glad to be writing a short story for once. It follows Clarissa. She had recently ended a relationship with her boyfriend of two years because they both agreed that the relationship had become stale and boring. With New Year’s approaching Clarissa is hoping to find someone new and exciting at a masquerade ball her and her best friend Nichole are attending. Will she find the right someone, or realize she misses her ex?

  • This is pretty focused on main characters but don’t hesitate to use several characters for the answers if you want to! (We want to get to know as many of your characters as possible)

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Where does your main character (MC) live? Were they born there, or did they move to that place?

Clarissa lives in Anytown USA

Does your MC have a dream career? What (if anything) stops them from pursuing it?

Clarissa doesn’t really have a current dream job. She doesn’t care for the job she currently has which is selling insurance over the phone, but she keeps her head up in case she figures out what she wants. Her ex Philip was very encouraging of her finding something she loved.

Did any of your characters ever go against their parents/family’s wishes? How did that change their relationship?

No parents in this story 😊

If faced with their greatest fear – would your MC try to overcome it or run the other way?

I guess I’d say run away until she had time to analyze it.

Did any character have to cut a person out of their life? Why?

She tried unsuccessfully to cut her ex Philip out of her life, but she has troubles doing so. He feels the same way about her. They have now boiled down to friends with benefits.

What is your main character’s biggest regret?

Not being able to move on and cut Philip out of her life completely.

Which character is most likely going to help a stranger, even if they got nothing out of it in return?

Probably Philip? He’s a nice guy.

If your character got good/bad news, who would be the person they first tell?

Clarissa would definitely tell her bff Nichole any news, she always does.

BONUS: Make an aesthetic for your MCs life if there had been no obstacles (money, geographical, etc.) and they had everything they wanted. (It is up to you if you want to explain it or not!)

Author to Author

So a writing friend of mine decided to do a segment on her blog called Author to Author. She talks about the author’s current works and works in progress and this week she chose me! Go check it out…although I am terrible behind the camera and my husband said it didn’t even sound like me, but whats life without feeling a little vulnerable? You can check out the segment  here: https://shaystone-seriously-wth.blogspot.com/2018/06/author-to-author-tia-lee-discusses.html

Writing

So, I currently have all these works in progress. There must be at least five with two very close to being finished. It’s really hard for me to decide which stories to give the time to finish. One great thing is only one has a timeline that needs to be finished so I’m currently working on that. But the others…I don’t know where to start and I happen to have another idea I want to get on paper…out with one in with another. It can be a bit overwhelming, but unlike a normal 9 to 5 it doesn’t matter if they never come together or I can work as much or little as I want.

I’m getting excited about the current WIP I’m working on. I just made the cover and I’m pretty excited about it. I’ll just have to see how this one goes, but I’m excited because I feel like this is the best story I have written so far, so I’m giving it all my time and efforts. Hopefully, something good will come of it. It’s a suspenseful romance.

Finished…I think ;)

Almost three months ago I started re-writing Vermilion Tears and I’m finally finished with the re-write! Wow! Who would have ever thought it would have taken so long? Well, not me anyway. I’m so excited it’s finished…again. I’m just as excited as the first time I thought I was finished, but this time I think it is truly done.

This is my first self-published book and it has been a huge learning curve. I think the hardest part as an indie author is finding a really good beta reader and reasonable editor and I finally feel like this time around I’ve done both. It takes a long time because you can’t know how good someone’s work is until you buy the services, so in a way, it’s like buying a book, you can’t truly know how good it is until you open it up and read it yourself.

Anyhow, I’m even more in love with my bookbaby than ever before and I can’t wait to get some reviews from the newest version of Vermilion and I know you can’t please everyone, but if I can please most I think that’s what I really want, just to entertain and have people walk away happy. Vermilion was never written to change a life, I wrote it for people to take a little, sometimes scary, journey with Lydia.

Best Selling Author?

So recently I’ve been seeing a whole lot of books by indie authors that say: By Best Selling Author on their books and it made me think. What exactly does that even mean? It made me wonder what list they were referring to and if it really meant anything at all or if it was just to lure readers to their books?

But then I found an article about just that with an author that was at the top of Amazon for her book just a little while and it made me change my mind about being too critical about the title. The article is by Kailin Gow and it can be found here. Interesting read and gave me many things to think about. Check it out it’s a good read.

Popping In

I’m waiting to get Vermilion Tears back from an editor and corrected so I can put the updates on Amazon! Also sent in a book I’m doing in an anthology to my beta reader (she helped me so much with rewriting Vermilion Tears). I always get restless while waiting to get work back. Guess I’ll just have to stick to writing my Historical Romance for now.

Take Scene 100

I’m not a perfectionist, I’m really not, well at least I don’t think I am…

But with my debut novel being self-published, I can’t just let be, I have to make it better. I kind of wish I was one of those people who were done and that’s it and moved on to a new project and forget about my first, but I just can’t. (Although, I am in the middle of my next project too.)

I didn’t get the benefits of being published (well to be honest with this novel I didn’t try because one thing I do know good and well about this novel is that it’s better self-published). I didn’t get the benefit of people in the industry to comment on my book who know what people like and don’t. I had to go through betas, who were helpful, but at the same time just wanted the book to read how they would have written the book instead of how the book should have felt to a normal reader. So I got some bad advice along the way with the good.

Now that I feel like I finally have enough review for my book I’m getting a lot of feedback that had been on my mind since I first started writing the book (and some insight I didn’t think of before) and feel that even though Vermilion Tears has only been out for 5 months I’m already ready to do a re-write.

Part of me is glad that my book is self-published because I can re-write to my heart’s content because Amazon lets you do that. I just feel a little bad for all those readers who didn’t get to read the newest version. I feel like they will be missing out, but I’m ever so glad and grateful they did read it and leave meaningful reviews behind.

P.S. The newer version won’t be out for another three weeks 😉

This has certainly been a learning experience. With my next book I hope to go through the traditional root so hopefully, it goes better….we will see…
