An Excerpt from a work in progress…

Ok, guys, I’m currently writing a new book and I’m in love with it so far! So I wanted to share the first page. Enjoy!

Lorraine frantically looked through Frank’s toiletry bag, but try as she might she couldn’t find what she was looking for. She could, unfortunately, hear him behind her in the large oversized shower singing away. He sang terribly and off-key, only adding to the list of reasons why Lorraine loathed her husband so much.

She looked over her shoulder momentarily to see Frank’s lathered hair as he went to town scrubbing what little hair he had left. His round three hundred and fifty-pound naked body made Lorraine shutter.

She moved to the medicine cabinet to look what she was searching for. She finally found it. She grabbed the sharp blade replacement for Frank’s expensive razor. She would kill her husband. She could stand him no more, two years was more than she could bear. No other woman would have stayed with him so long. At least that’s what Lorraine told herself.

The kill should be easy, fast and to the artery in the neck. That was if his fat neck would allow her to find his artery. Lorraine began to stride toward her husband, but mid-step the phone rang.

Shit, who could that be? She wondered.

She stood contemplating if she should get the phone or just get on with her plan. This was no ordinary household. In an ordinary household in 1986 if husband and wife were occupied the phone would just go to the answering machine and they would retrieve the message at a more convenient time. Not in the Nikolayev family.

My Fiance’s Brother

This was a very sweet romance by Odette Stone. I love the naive and vulnerable MC Emily, I could relate to her right away. This romance had twists and turns that made me wonder what would happen to Emily next and hoping everything would turn out for the best. The sympathetic Emily is what really drew me to the book and all the parallels her life had with her romantic interest Jackson, although parts of their lives were vastly different. I’m not sure what happens in the end because there is a cliff-hanger, so now I will have to find out in the next book…

Forever Marked

Forever Marked is a suspenseful romance by Jesse Lorenzo.

The prologue drew me in right away! The thing that confused me is the author’s descriptions of the man hunting her down in the prologue seemed to be supernatural, but he is not supernatural. The descriptions she used made me think this man was, but I think she was going more for a description that this man was beyond his human instincts and had only animal qualities, which totally worked for the story, but was a little confusing.

The plot was great. There were some cliches throughout the plot, but the author made them work in my opinion. Like the antagonist, being hell-bent on finding her just because she said no to him, I still enjoyed the story even though this seemed weak, but I still liked the story. Also, everyone in the town of Skye seemed overly open about everything and expected her to open up a bit fast to me. I would have been second guessing her motives if my high school bestie never told me about their daughter came to town and said, “hey such and such are my parents!” but again, even though this was a weak point, I still really liked this story. As this is a self-published book it reminds me how much better it would have been if she was able to get a publisher (because as much a people hate to admit it the editors make a huge difference in a story, not just the grammar, the actual story)

The characters were my favorite part. I loved the romance between Ellora and Behr it was very sweet. I also liked all the other characters in the book no matter how nieve they seemed to be. It was set in Scottland and it made the book all the more exciting.

The suspense kept me glued to this book the whole way through. I was a little confused because there was some head hopping going on, so some of the time I was confused who was thinking what. My favorite part of the book is that there is the story seen through Ellora’s eyes and then the story unfolding through a detective’s eyes, which was cleverly crafted when the two stories converge. Can’t wait to read the next one!

My most recent read- Tales After Midnight

This was my Halloween read. I really should have posted this sooner, but now is better than never.

I really enjoyed this anthology! It’s the perfect read right around Halloween and did not disappoint. With this many stories, there are bound to be several you like. I enjoyed reading every one, but some really knocked it out of the ballpark and I’d like to give a shout out to those but read them all if you buy this anthology! Some of my favorites were Manor of Solitude, Harem of Dolls, The Crossing, The Dark Truth, and All Hallows Horror.
This anthology has everything you ever wanted in the horror genre, there is the spooky and hunted, the slasher, the twisted psychological thriller, and even a bit of aliens…you just have to read it for yourself and I highly recommend it!

Disney Tag!

The Little Mermaid
A character that is out of their element, a fish out of water

My goodness…there are so many stories that fit this description! I think that’s what make a majority of great books; a character out of their element. I’ll go with Captain’s Courageous by Rudyard Kipling. I pick this one because it is literally at sea so it seemed fitting. Harvey Cheyne: brat turned man, good story!

A character who goes through major development

This is also a very common theme in so many books. I’m going to go with Jacob from Mrs. Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. He is a wimp and coward, but in the end, even though he is scared, he proves himself worthy.

Snow White
A book with an eclectic cast of characters

I’m also going to go with Mrs. Peregrine’s again with this one. This group of kids is pretty diverse. I would recommend reading it if you like books with a large diverse cast.

Sleeping Beauty
A book that put you to sleep

The Circle. I love the concept of an evil corps type setting, but the writing fell short. I hated the main character, Mae, and she was so bland she put me to sleep.

The Lion King
A character that had something traumatic happen in their childhood

Redeeming Love, Angel becomes a prostitute at only 8! It’s a great book and read though!

Beauty and the Beast
A book that was a beast (a.k.a a big book that you were intimidated by but in the end found beautiful)

I’m hoping to feel that way about the book my husband gave me to read, which I read at lunch during work. It’s The Way of Kings, it’s alright so far, I’m hoping for more, but I’m only a little way into it so far.

A character who has their wish granted for better or for worse

A Mid Summer’s Night Dream by William Shakespeare. This is such a cute mixed up story that has a happy ending for all. One of my favorites.

A character who pretends to be someone or something that they are not

Jane Eyre. Jane’s love is hiding something, but what?…No spoilers!

Toy Story
A book with characters who you want to come to life

I don’t really know. There are so many good ones! I just love to re-read if they are that good. 😊

Disney Descendants
Your favorite villain

Hmmm, I don’t know lol! You can’t have a good story without one, but maybe I need to read more stories with more dynamic villains…to the TBR list…. (Feel free to drop one of your favorites down below, and feel free to pick up this fun tag!!)

I Kind of See Dead People: A Speritual Memoir

I Kind of See Dead People: A Spiritual Memoir is by self-published author Skyler Hoffman. This is one of few memoirs I have read, I usually stick with fiction, but the author contacted me with an ARC to review so I thought why not? With the name and the cover and the humorous way he writes sometimes this memoir comes off as a bit satirical, but once I got halfway into it I decided it was not.

I Kind of See Dead People is about Skyler’s reflections about his spiritual journey and where it has taken him so far. His journey has led him to believe that he has psychic abilities and what abilities he posses. He can sometimes predict the future and is currently working on seeing auras and talking to dead people.

Skyler has an easy writing style so it is an easy and fast read. My favorite part of the book is the easy writing style and the cross-referencing of other books on the subject matter, although this book mainly revolves around his own experiences which is what one would expect from a memoir.

I realized I’ve only been putting up 5-star reviews, so I decided to even it out with a one-star review. I very, very rarely give out one-star reviews, because I know just how hard it is to write and my opinion is just that: an opinion. I feel like some reviewers seem to think that their opinions are fact, but I know my one opinion isn’t going to change the fact that this is a best selling book, but in case you don’t like it either, we can find something in common.

I give this book a one-star review because while it is very well written, I hate the main character. On top of that, I felt like Palahniuk is just trying to go for a jaw drop factor on every page, which to me gets tiresome after a while. Honestly halfway through I had to DNF because I saw no character arc or any point to the story in the first place.

In the end, I think that Choke is for a certain kind of reader and I’m not the target. I like my hero or even anti-heroes to have more redeeming characteristics and a more obvious plot line. I don’t want to just be grossed out every page.

Zombie Apocalypse Book Tag

I’ve stumbled upon another fun book tag. This time it’s the Zombie Apocalypse Book Tag. I got the idea from I love her blog, go check it out! What you need to do is:

1. Pick 5 books

2. Turn to a random page

3. The first name you see gets to be on your zombie survival team

4. Apply the characters to the 10 situations and types of people in the order you got them

Let’s begin!

1.) Mrs. Petergrine’s Home for Pacilular Children

1. The first person to die: Enoch

I’m okay with this lol. That kid is super creepy. Although good in this kind of situation so maybe a bad death…

2. The person you trip to get away from the zombies: Emma

Oh man, lol I’m a jerk! I chose poorly she has good leadership skills…

2.) Game of Thrones

3. The first person to turn into a zombie: Arya

Sad face. She would have made a great fighter. I’m getting worried all the strong people are dying and I’m going to be left with some weak characters!!! lol

4. The person that trips YOU to get away from the zombies: Eddard Stark

Well, that was a surprise, guess he was afraid of Arya too. What happened to always being righteous and following the rules? Tripping a lady, really?

3.) The Vampire Lestat

5. The idiot of the team: Lestat

Yes, he can certainly be a bit of an airhead. No surprises there.

6. The “brains” of the team: Enkil

Well, he was the co-leader of an entire empire with his wife, so maybe this is a good thing? Also, his vampire skills might be useful.

4.) City of Ember

7. The team’s medic: Lina

Well, she is very resourceful

8. The weapons expert: Poppy

Yes, let’s give all the weapons to a three-year-old. Maybe our leader isn’t very good at leading lol

5.) Vermilion Tears (you knew I was going to add this didn’t you 😉  )

9. The brawler: Lydia

I suppose the werewolf in her might make her a bit heated on a full moon.

10. The Team Captain: Edgar

Well, he is very smart and resourceful, not sure about giving the weapons to Poppy, but maybe he knows something we don’t..

It’s October and getting to Halloween! Feel free to join in on this fun tag!!!

Custome Fit

Custome fit is by author Lexi Miles. Sunni is a personal dresser for the famous and elite. Which was interesting to me right away as I always assumed the celebrities had someone personally give them fashion advice, but didn’t realize it was a real thing.

I really liked the MC in this story. Sunni is a spunky woman and unlike a lot of characters that can’t make up their minds or are afraid to tell their true feelings Sunni is not. I found that very refreshing about her. I’m always slowly dying inside when the characters obviously have feelings for each other but wait until the last page to finally confess those feelings.

There are some ups and downs in the story (like don’t fall in love with your client, which she has a hard time following) but in the end, it’s a happy ending.

This has very explicit sex scenes XXX. I recommend this for those who like a quick fun read, with strong lead females and erotic sex scenes.

P.S. This book in the Holiday series takes place during Thanksgiving.
